Yorktown Man Charged in Hampton Homicide Investigation

HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton Police have arrested a Yorktown man in connection with a deadly shooting that left one man dead and another injured earlier this month in a Hampton neighborhood.

Police announced May 15 that 22-year-old Kaleef Dunn of Yorktown has been charged in the May 10 homicide on Algonquin Road.

According to investigators, Dunn faces one count each of second-degree murder, burglary while armed, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. He is also charged with two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The shooting happened around 8:25 a.m. on May 10 in the 400 block of Algonquin Road. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found one man dead inside the home and another adult male suffering from a gunshot wound.

The injured victim was transported to a local hospital by Hampton Fire and Rescue. Police said his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Authorities later identified the homicide victim as 21-year-old Caden Jones of Newport News.

Investigators say a verbal altercation between people who knew each other escalated into gunfire inside the residence. Police emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The case remains under investigation by detectives with the Hampton Police Division’s Major Crimes Unit. Investigators have not released additional details about what led to the shooting or the relationship between Dunn and the victims.

Residents in the area described the incident as unsettling in what is typically considered a quieter residential section of Hampton. Violent crimes involving acquaintances continue to make up a significant portion of homicide investigations across the region, according to law enforcement officials.
