Virginia Beach Police Use License Plate Technology to Arrest Teen in 14th Street Shooting

A 14-year-old boy from Chesapeake has been arrested in connection with a shooting that took place on January 19th in Virginia Beach, thanks in part to automated license plate-reading technology.

At around 11:15 a.m., dispatchers received reports of a shooting on the 800 block of 14th Street. Officers arrived to find an adult man with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover.

Police say they were able to quickly identify the suspect vehicle by using Flock Safety cameras, a surveillance system that scans license plates. Within a short time, officers located the car and arrested the teen who was inside.

The 14-year-old has been charged with:

  • Aggravated malicious wounding

  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony

The case is still being investigated by the VBPD Detective Bureau. Anyone with information is encouraged to call (757) 385-4101.
