Virginia Beach Police Probe Officer-Involved Shooting on Brasileno Drive

The Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) is investigating a shooting involving one of its officers late Sunday night on Brasileno Drive.

Around 10:17 p.m. on April 27, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a possible domestic dispute in the 2400 block of Brasileno Drive. When they arrived, they found 39-year-old Gokhan Karabulut holding a knife to another person’s throat. One officer fired at Karabulut, hitting him.

Karabulut was rushed to a nearby hospital and is now in stable condition. The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, suffered minor injuries.

Karabulut is now facing serious charges: Abduction, Strangulation, Child Endangerment, and Domestic Assault.

No officers were hurt during the encounter. The officer who fired the shot has been placed on critical incident leave, which the department says is standard after these kinds of events.

Two criminal investigations are now underway: one by the VBPD Detective Bureau and another independent review by the Virginia Beach Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney (OCA). After those are complete, VBPD’s Internal Affairs Unit will launch an administrative review to make sure the officer’s actions followed department policies and training protocols.

VBPD is asking anyone with information to call the Detective Bureau at 757-385-4101.
