Two Dead After Barricade Standoff in Norfolk; Police Investigate as Possible Murder-Suicide

NORFOLK, VA — Two people are dead and a community is left shaken after a barricade situation on Peterson Street ended in tragedy Thursday morning.

Police were at the 3900 block of Peterson Street around 9:30 a.m. on May 1 to follow up on a missing person case involving a 33-year-old woman reported missing the day before. When officers tried to speak with a man at the home, he barricaded himself inside.

The Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team and Special Operations Team were called in, and after several hours of trying to make contact, officers entered the home and discovered a grim scene: the 38-year-old man was suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the missing woman was also found inside, fatally shot.

The man was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this point, detectives have not publicly confirmed the circumstances that led to the deaths. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will officially determine the cause and manner of death. Authorities have not yet released the names of the individuals, pending notification of next of kin.

Police say the investigation is still active, and more details will be released as they become available.
