Two Chesapeake residents, Isaiah J. Card, 24, and Dahnico Jharon McCoy, aka Donny, 22, have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in bank fraud, identity theft, and the armed robbery of a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier.
According to court documents, the events leading to their arrest began on December 18, 2022, when Postal Inspectors and the Chesapeake Police Department (CPD) conducted surveillance at the Chesapeake Main Post Office. At 11:37 p.m., authorities observed a vehicle arriving at the post office. Two individuals exited the vehicle and used an arrow key to access blue mail collection boxes while Card remained in the car. An arrow key is a specialized U.S. Postal key that opens various types of mailboxes in a specific area.
When the two individuals returned to the vehicle with stolen mail, law enforcement intervened to prevent the vehicle from leaving. While Postal Inspectors detained Card, CPD pursued the two fleeing suspects on foot. One of the suspects, McCoy, was apprehended after abandoning a bag containing approximately 250 pieces of stolen mail. Officers also recovered discarded clothing belonging to McCoy, which matched a distinctive jacket seen in previous mail theft incidents.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed numerous stolen checks and Western Union Money Orders. Some of these money orders had been “washed” and made out in the names of McCoy and Card, using the account details of various victims whose mail had been stolen.
On April 19, 2023, Card and McCoy traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina, and committed an armed robbery of a mail carrier to obtain another arrow key. McCoy indicated he had a firearm during the robbery, and the pair subsequently used the stolen key to access mail from several postal boxes in the Raleigh area. They were arrested on April 27, 2023, during a traffic stop, which led to the discovery of the stolen arrow key, a handgun, and at least 180 stolen checks in their vehicle.
On February 8, 2024, McCoy and Card pled guilty to possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft. McCoy was sentenced to seven years in prison on June 21, while Card received a seven-year sentence on June 28.
