State Police Investigating Norfolk Officer-Involved Shooting on Monticello Avenue

Norfolk, VA — Virginia State Police are investigating a shooting involving Norfolk Police officers early Saturday morning.

Just before 4 a.m. on April 27th, officers were called to an apartment complex in the 400 block of Monticello Avenue after several people reported someone armed with a gun.

When officers got there, they found a man holding a firearm in the courtyard. According to police, the man didn’t follow commands to drop the weapon, and officers opened fire. The man was shot but is expected to survive after being taken to a nearby hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

No officers or bystanders were hurt during the incident.

This marks the second police-involved shooting in Norfolk within a matter of days — something that Police Chief Mark Talbot addressed, calling it a reminder of the dangers officers face daily. “Experiencing two shootings involving officers within a few days is both a difficult reminder that policing remains an extremely dangerous profession and a reassurance to our community that we have heroic police officers…responding to volatile situations where risk of injury or death is ever-present,” Talbot said.

Chief Talbot added that in both recent shootings, officers relied heavily on their training to protect themselves and the public.

The officers involved in this latest incident have been placed on administrative duty while the investigation continues. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations or leave a tip through the P3Tips mobile app.
