Police Shoot Armed Teen After Reported Gun Threat in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach police shot an 18-year-old man on Tuesday morning after he allegedly pointed a handgun at them during a confrontation on Honeygrove Road.

The incident started around 8:41 a.m. on June 4, when someone called 911 reporting that a young man had just pointed a gun at them in the 4600 block of Honeygrove Rd. Officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department responded and quickly found the suspect, identified as Shaun Marlar, a Virginia Beach resident.

According to police, Marlar was armed and refused orders to drop the weapon. Instead, officers say he aimed it at them—prompting them to fire. Marlar was hit and taken to a local hospital. As of Wednesday, he remains in critical but stable condition.

Police later recovered what turned out to be a replica handgun at the scene.

Marlar is facing two charges of Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and three counts of Brandishing a Firearm. The officers involved were not injured and are now on temporary Critical Incident Leave, which the department says is standard protocol.

Two separate investigations are now underway. The first, led by VBPD’s Detective Bureau, will focus on the shooting itself. Their findings will be turned over to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney (OCA), which is also conducting its own independent investigation.

Once both criminal investigations are complete, the VBPD’s Internal Affairs Unit will conduct a review to ensure that the officers followed departmental policy and training.

Anyone who may have seen what happened or has information is urged to contact the Detective Bureau at 757-385-4101.
