Overnight Shooting on North Armistead Avenue Leaves One Man Dead

Just after midnight on February 17, Hampton police were called to a quiet stretch of North Armistead Avenue — and what they found has now turned into a homicide investigation.

According to the Hampton Police Division, Public Safety Communications received a 911 call at approximately 12:31 a.m. reporting a shooting in the 2000 block of North Armistead Avenue.

When officers arrived, they located an adult man inside a residence suffering from what authorities described as a life-threatening gunshot wound. Members of the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue responded as well, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

While officers were still at the house, dispatchers received another call — this time from Sentara Careplex — about a walk-in gunshot victim being treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Police went to the hospital and confirmed the two incidents were connected.

Investigators say both men were at the residence when gunfire broke out. The man who died was struck inside the home. The second victim ran outside after hearing the shots and was then hit by gunfire as well. Despite being wounded, he was able to drive himself to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities believe this was an isolated incident. Detectives with the Hampton Police Major Crimes Unit are continuing to investigate what led up to the shooting and who may be responsible.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Hampton Police Division at 757–727–6111.

For neighbors along North Armistead Avenue, the early morning violence has left many shaken. As investigators work to piece together what happened, officials are urging the public to come forward with any details that could help move the case forward.
