Charlene D. Carey-Chavez, 37, of Norfolk, is facing multiple charges after a violent encounter with police Thursday afternoon.
According to Norfolk Police, they were first called out around 1:55 p.m. on April 25 to the 800 block of E Little Creek Road. Someone reported seeing a woman—who’d already been accused of assaulting someone the day before—back in the area causing trouble.
Officers found Carey-Chavez a short distance away, near Sewells Point Road and Avenue J. When they tried to approach her, police say she pulled out a weapon and refused to listen to commands to drop it. Officers opened fire, hitting Carey-Chavez and causing what authorities are calling a life-threatening injury.
She’s now facing charges of assault and battery, grand larceny, and brandishing a firearm. She’s still in the hospital but will be moved to Norfolk City Jail once doctors clear her for release.
Meanwhile, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the review of the shooting itself, as is standard when police use deadly force. Thankfully, no officers were injured during the incident.
