Norfolk Police Investigating Street Takeover on Redgate Avenue

Norfolk Police are investigating a weekend car meetup and suspected street takeover that drew large crowds and reports of reckless driving near the intersection of Redgate Avenue and Greenway Court.

Police say officers were first called to the 1000 block of Redgate Avenue around 8:22 p.m. on May 17 after multiple callers reported vehicles speeding through the intersection while crowds gathered nearby.

According to the department, the first responding officer was diverted to a separate emergency involving a person with a weapon, delaying the response. A second officer was dispatched at 8:38 p.m., and police arrived at the scene two minutes later.

Residents in the area reported seeing large groups of vehicles gathering and drivers performing dangerous maneuvers in the roadway, part of a growing trend of unauthorized car meetups and so-called “street takeovers” seen across Hampton Roads and other parts of Virginia.

Norfolk Police said the department actively monitors these events through its Criminal Intelligence Unit and conducts follow-up investigations aimed at identifying organizers and participants.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the Redgate Avenue incident and are asking anyone with photos, videos, or other information tied to the gathering to submit evidence through the department’s public service portal. Police are also asking the public to help identify individuals involved.

Information can be submitted directly to Norfolk Police or anonymously through Norfolk Crime Line.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
