Norfolk police have charged a 45-year-old man with murder more than two years after a fatal shooting on Jubilee Street.
Police said Lamont R. Fortson, of Norfolk, has been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in connection with the September 2023 killing of Kenneth A. Perry.
The shooting happened around 2:55 p.m. on Sept. 10, 2023, in the 1700 block of Jubilee Street.
Officers responding to a report of a gunshot victim found Perry, 58, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound, according to the Norfolk Police Department. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Norfolk homicide detectives continued investigating the case and eventually identified Fortson as a suspect, police said.
Fortson was already incarcerated in Florida on unrelated charges. According to Norfolk police, after his release there, he was returned to Norfolk to face charges in Perry’s death.
Police did not provide additional details about what led detectives to Fortson or what evidence resulted in the charges.
Fortson is being held without bond at the Norfolk City Jail.
The charges are allegations, and Fortson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
