NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk police have charged a 24-year-old man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of an 86-year-old pedestrian late Sunday night.
According to the Norfolk Police Department, officers with the Traffic Unit and Auto Squad responded around 10:48 p.m. on June 1 to the 5900 block of Curlew Drive after receiving a report about a suspicious vehicle that may have been involved in a crash.
As investigators followed up on that report, they discovered an elderly man suffering from life-threatening injuries in the 100 block of North Military Highway. Despite emergency response efforts, the 86-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not yet released the victim’s name, pending notification of family members.
A short time later, officers took Malik Alea-Ngongo, 24, of Norfolk, into custody near the scene. He has been charged with hit and run and is being held at the Norfolk City Jail without bond.
Investigators are still working to determine exactly what led to the deadly crash. Police said it remains unclear whether speed or alcohol played a role in the incident.
The crash has drawn renewed attention to pedestrian safety along North Military Highway, one of Norfolk’s busiest traffic corridors. Authorities have not released additional details about how the collision occurred or whether additional charges may be filed.
“This remains an active investigation,” Norfolk police said in a statement. “Updates will be shared when they become available.”
