VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A 20-year-old Norfolk man has been arrested after Virginia Beach police connected him to multiple reckless driving incidents along the Oceanfront corridor, including a recent case involving burnouts near Atlantic Avenue.
According to the Virginia Beach Police Department, officers responded around May 10 to the area of 40th Street and Atlantic Avenue after receiving reports of a vehicle performing burnouts in the roadway.
An officer assigned to the department’s Second Precinct located the suspect vehicle and determined it was connected to two other open investigations tied to incidents that occurred on March 22 and April 25. Police said both earlier incidents had been captured on surveillance video.
Officers conducted a traffic stop and arrested Kyle Matthews, 20, of Norfolk, in connection with the May 10 incident.
During the investigation, detectives were also able to close the two previous cases and obtain additional warrants related to those incidents.
Matthews has been charged with:
- Three counts of racing/exhibition driving
- Three counts of destruction of city property
The incidents come as Virginia Beach continues to crack down on reckless driving and illegal street activity in the Oceanfront area, especially during the busy spring and summer tourism season. Exhibition driving, which includes burnouts and street racing behavior, has become an increasing concern for both residents and business owners along Atlantic Avenue.
Police have not released additional details about the extent of the property damage or whether more arrests are expected.
The investigation remains ongoing by the VBPD Second Precinct.
Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the Virginia Beach Police Department at 757-385-2700.
