In a recent court ruling that underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and firearm offenses in Virginia, a Richmond man, Ladrale Antonio Putney, 44, has been sentenced to a two-decade prison term. This decision comes as a result of Putney’s involvement in possession with intent to distribute heroin, among other charges, and his illegal possession of a firearm due to his status as a convicted felon.
The case came to light in the early hours of February 8, 2021, when Newport News Police Department officers initiated a traffic stop for a vehicle driven by Putney. The vehicle was observed traveling in the wrong direction on a one-way street, without the headlights or taillights activated. Upon interaction, Putney presented an invalid driver’s license. The officers’ suspicion was further raised by the smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle, alongside visible remnants of marijuana “shake” scattered inside.
A subsequent search of Putney’s vehicle revealed a trove of illegal substances and paraphernalia, including approximately 30 grams of cocaine base, digital scales, and narcotics packaging materials. Moreover, Putney was found in possession of a stolen, loaded handgun, a significant quantity of heroin mixed with fentanyl, cocaine base, powder cocaine, marijuana, and a sum of $4,308. A forensic laboratory analysis confirmed the identity of these controlled substances, highlighting the dangerous addition of fentanyl to the heroin.
Given Putney’s prior convictions at the federal level, his possession of firearms or ammunition was strictly prohibited, adding gravity to the charges against him. On October 13, 2023, Putney entered a guilty plea to charges of intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm, leading to his 20-year sentencing.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement and the judicial system in curbing the twin threats of drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession. It also underscores the critical role of routine traffic stops in uncovering and addressing such illicit activities within our communities.
