A Newport News man, Jermaine Damon Outlaw, 39, has been sentenced to 17 years and six months in federal prison for his involvement in drug trafficking and possession of a firearm related to those activities.
On August 29, 2019, police detained Outlaw at a Best Western hotel in Newport News, acting on multiple outstanding felony warrants. When arrested, Outlaw had 1.36 grams of cocaine, $855 in cash, and a loaded, illegal handgun in his possession. His cellphone, recovered at the scene, revealed text messages confirming regular drug distribution activities.
Outlaw’s criminal record paints a grim picture. With over 20 prior convictions, including assault and battery, possession of a firearm on school property, drug-related crimes, and malicious wounding, his history of violent and illegal behavior classifies him as a career offender under federal law.
This latest sentence reflects the serious consequences of repeated criminal activity, particularly when it involves firearms and drug trafficking. Law enforcement agencies in the area have emphasized their commitment to tackling violent offenders and reducing the harm caused by drug-related crimes.
