Man Held on Drug Charges Dies in Norfolk City Jail

Norfolk, VA – A 39-year-old inmate at the Norfolk City Jail, Sterling Lee Lyons, II, has died following a medical emergency in his cell early Monday morning.

According to officials, deputies found Lyons unresponsive around 7 a.m. on February 3, 2025, and immediately began first aid while calling for medical staff. Jail medical personnel responded until EMS arrived and transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Lyons had been in custody since March 3, 2023, on charges of possession with intent to distribute (PWID) five or more pounds of marijuana and conspiracy to distribute marijuana.

Authorities say no foul play is suspected, and the incident appears to have been a medical emergency. The Norfolk Police Department has been notified and will investigate, which is standard procedure in cases of inmate deaths. The Virginia Department of Corrections has also been informed, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.

Ongoing Investigation

Officials have assured the public that inmate safety remains a top priority. However, questions may arise regarding medical care and response times within the jail system.
