Man Arrested After Norfolk State Campus Shooting Injures Two

A 20-year-old man from Ringgold, Virginia, has been arrested in connection with a shooting that left two people injured late Saturday night on the campus of Norfolk State University.

Police say the shooting happened just before midnight on April 19 in the 2200 block of Presidential Parkway, near university housing. When officers arrived, they found two 22-year-old men with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to a local hospital and are expected to recover.

Following an investigation, detectives charged Zakeyis A. Womack with multiple felonies: two counts each of malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting while committing a felony.

Womack was arrested across state lines in Reidsville, North Carolina, thanks to a coordinated effort between the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Task Force and its North Carolina counterpart. He’s now being held without bond.

“This tragic act of campus violence exemplifies the level of commitment the Norfolk Police Department has in keeping our promise to deliver justice and provide safety to the community we serve,” said Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot in a statement. He added that he hopes the arrest brings some sense of reassurance to the Norfolk State community.

Authorities have not shared any details yet about what may have led to the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
