The Hampton Police Division is investigating an accidental self-inflicted shooting near John Smith Elementary School, located in the 300 block of Woodland Road, on January 16, 2025.
At approximately 2:11 p.m., Hampton Public Safety Communications received a call in reference to a self-inflicted shooting in the rear parking lot of John Smith Elementary School. Officers immediately initiated safety protocol for the school and responded to the area. On scene, officers located an adult male in a vehicle outside of the school with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Members of the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue responded and transported the male to a local hospital.
The investigation is on-going; however, it does appear to be isolated and accidental at this time. At no time was there a threat to the school and no students and staff were in danger. A lockdown was initiated while public safety personnel were on-scene rendering aid. Officers remained on scene to assist with an orderly and expeditious dismissal.
