A Hampton man who led police on a high-speed chase before throwing away a stolen handgun has been sentenced to prison.
Mouctar Balde, 25, was sentenced this week to three years in federal prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to court documents.
The case began on May 21, 2025, when officers with the Hampton Police Division and Virginia State Police attempted to stop Balde’s vehicle as part of a search warrant investigation.
Instead of pulling over, investigators say Balde sped away from officers, running multiple red lights and driving into oncoming traffic during the pursuit.
The chase ended when Balde hit a curb, disabling his vehicle. Police say he then jumped out and ran.
During the foot pursuit, Balde threw away a handgun just before officers caught him, according to investigators.
Police quickly recovered the weapon. Authorities say the gun had been reported stolen and was loaded with 16 rounds of ammunition, including one round already in the chamber.
Prosecutors noted that Balde has several previous convictions, including:
-
Larceny
-
Reckless handling of a firearm
-
Obstruction
-
Evading and eluding
-
Possession with intent to distribute marijuana
Court records show Balde was already on probation for the marijuana conviction when the incident happened.
Because of his felony record, Balde is prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition.
He will now serve three years in federal prison for the weapons charge.
