In a concerning display of disregard for public safety, Hampton Police Division has apprehended Joseph McEver Walton IV following an incident that put both emergency responders and civilians at risk. On the evening of February 27, 2024, law enforcement officials were alerted to a situation involving an armed individual menacingly pointing a firearm at vehicles in the vicinity of N. Armistead Avenue and YMCA Way.
Upon their arrival, officers witnessed Walton in the act, promptly detaining him to prevent any further threat to the public. The investigation that followed unearthed Walton’s perilous actions; he had aimed and discharged his firearm towards a City of Hampton Fire Engine and another vehicle. Remarkably, despite Walton firing shots, there were no casualties or material damage reported.
Walton is facing a series of grave charges including four counts of Brandishing a Firearm, three counts of Shooting at an Occupied Vehicle, three counts of Shooting Across a Roadway, and one count of Reckless Handling of a Firearm. This event underscores the dangers that law enforcement and emergency responders face daily and highlights the importance of stringent gun control measures to prevent such potentially catastrophic incidents.
