Hampton Detectives Search for Suspects After Mercury Boulevard Gunfire

A Sunday evening shooting along West Mercury Boulevard remains under investigation as Hampton police search for the people responsible.

According to the Hampton Police Division, officers were called around 7:05 p.m. on May 4 to the 1st block of West Mercury Boulevard after reports of gunfire in the area.

When officers arrived, they found an adult suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken by Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue to a local hospital with injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators say the victim was standing with a group of people when one or more suspects approached on foot and opened fire. The victim was struck several times before the suspect or suspects fled the scene prior to police arriving.

Detectives with the department’s Major Crimes Unit have taken over the investigation. Police have not released any suspect descriptions, and investigators have not said what may have led to the shooting.

The shooting adds to ongoing concerns about violent crime along some of Hampton’s busiest commercial corridors, including the heavily traveled Mercury Boulevard area, which connects neighborhoods, businesses, and retail centers across the city.
