A Gloucester resident is heading to federal prison after authorities say he turned his home into an illegal weapons and drug market.
Daniel Shaun Smith, 37, was sentenced to four years and nine months for selling guns without a license and for distributing methamphetamine. Court documents show Smith organized multiple sales out of his house earlier this year—offering everything from handguns and shotguns to thousands of rounds of ammo.
The investigation started in January when law enforcement arranged a controlled buy. On Jan. 16, Smith and an accomplice sold a stolen handgun and a shotgun. Two days later, Smith again sold a shotgun and ammunition—and reportedly offered to use meth with the buyer.
The most serious sale happened on Feb. 8. In that transaction, Smith handed over a sawed-off shotgun, another handgun, nearly 2,000 rounds of assorted ammunition, and over 1.5 grams of meth. Rifle scopes and other gear were also sold. A second individual added another 3,000 rounds to the deal.
Federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives seized the weapons and ammunition. Smith was sentenced in federal court in Newport News.
