Driver Killed After Officer-Involved Shooting on East Little Creek Road

NORFOLK, Va. — Virginia State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Norfolk that left a driver dead and an officer injured late Sunday night along East Little Creek Road.

According to Norfolk Police, the incident happened around 9:42 p.m. on May 25 in the 1800 block of E. Little Creek Road during a traffic stop.

Police say officers were speaking with the driver when they discovered the person had multiple misdemeanor warrants. Officers then ordered the driver several times to get out of the vehicle, but the driver refused, according to investigators.

Authorities say the situation escalated when the driver suddenly began to pull away in the vehicle, dragging an officer in the process. During that encounter, the officer fired their service weapon.

The officer suffered injuries that police described as non-life-threatening and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The driver was also transported to the hospital with what police called a life-threatening gunshot wound. The driver later died from those injuries.

The shooting shut down part of the busy East Little Creek Road corridor Sunday night as investigators worked the scene. Residents in the area reported seeing a heavy police presence and traffic delays while evidence was collected.

Norfolk Police requested that the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation take over the investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

Authorities have not released the names of either the officer or the driver.
