Chesapeake Administrator Admits to $100,000 Wire Fraud Scheme

A Chesapeake man, Brandon Thompson, 44, admitted in federal court today to misusing a company credit card, racking up over $100,000 in unauthorized personal expenses. He pled guilty to wire fraud, a charge that carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Thompson worked as an administrator for a Virginia joint venture involving physicians and Sentara Hospital. His role included overseeing purchases, managing budgets, and ensuring cost efficiency within the organization.

However, prosecutors say that between January 2018 and February 2023, Thompson repeatedly misused his company card. The fraudulent charges included personal rent payments, a wedding reception, attorney fees for his divorce, and groceries. He also splurged on luxury items, such as diamonds, airline tickets, and a country club membership.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 9, 2025. Federal sentencing guidelines mean Thompson’s actual prison time will likely be less than the 20-year maximum. The court will weigh various factors, including the scale of the fraud and Thompson’s cooperation, to determine his punishment.

This case highlights the importance of oversight and accountability in handling organizational resources.
