Residents along Bagnall Road in Norfolk are waking up to new developments in a case that has weighed heavily on the neighborhood since early December.

According to the Norfolk Police Department, officers were called to the 900 block of Bagnall Road around 3:20 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

That man was later identified as 26-year-old Cameron S. Nicholson, a Norfolk resident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

For weeks, detectives worked the case quietly. Neighbors reported seeing investigators canvassing the area and collecting evidence as part of what police describe as a month-long investigation.

Now, authorities say they have charged 18-year-old Zachari I. Mills, also of Norfolk, with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in connection with Nicholson’s death.

Mills is being held without bond at the Norfolk City Jail.

Police have not released additional details about what led up to the shooting or what may have motivated it. As the case moves forward, many in this part of Norfolk are left with lingering questions — and a renewed concern about violence in residential neighborhoods where families expect to feel safe.
